307 Real Estate continues to grow, and we are adding new agents to all our offices! We think that it is so important that the communities in which we work know our agents, their backgrounds and what excites them about working in the real estate world. Keep reading to learn a little bit more about new Sheridan agent, Joel Saur.
307: Tell us a little more about your background:
Joel: I was born in Sheridan, Wyoming and raised in Buffalo. My family was big on travel and spending time abroad, so I spent time all over the world growing up. When I graduated from high school, I went to work on oil rigs and worked 7 days on, 7 days off. I always loved to travel on my 7 days off (mostly intercontinental travel) and took bigger trips when I could. I have done a lot of trekking, including across Spain, the Annapurna Circuit and in the Himalayas.
After that, I got into working on Alaskan commercial fishing boats which I did for awhile and then moved back to Sheridan where I started a tree service business. Long story short, I then moved to LA where I was a drummer in several bands and continued my tree service business, did some touring and lived all over the LA area.
After 9 years in California, I moved back to Wyoming to work on some projects. I have a big workshop and studio here and I am big on the local food movement in northern Wyoming. I am excited to add real estate to my work portfolio.
307: Why real estate? What are you most excited about?
Joel: The biggest thing I am most excited about working in real estate is the people. You learn a lot about a person when shopping for a home. Their values and priorities really show through when making such a big purchase. It’s a huge transition for many people, and that is a lovely time to meet someone and be of service.
I have always been interested in the real estate industry. Whenever I see a “For Sale” sign, I am always interested in learning more about properties, the process and dreaming about what I would do with that property.
In the tree business, I saw a lot of homes and properties, and I developed relationships with a lot of landowners and land managers. Real estate has always seemed to come up in these conversations. The newer part for me is getting used to the office work and the contracts. I have never worked in a conventional office setting before, but I am excited to learn.
I have always been interested in non-conventional builds and building materials, so I am looking forward to learning more about land and commercial development. Real estate is a great combo of what I am already interested in and passionate about, and it will be a career that will accessorize what I am already working on and what I want to do going forward.
I got connected with 307 Real Estate through Mark Wilson. I had worked for Mark years go at IGA in Buffalo. I ran into Mark after I moved back to Wyoming and he told me all about working in real estate for 307, and here I am.
307: What do you love about the Sheridan/Buffalo area? What would you tell people who are looking to move there?
Joel: I have always been interested in the forward direction of these cities. Sheridan and Buffalo are great cities for their sizes and have a lot to offer. I am excited to bring new ideas to the area and be a bigger part of conversations with the cities and contractors going forward.
I have always loved the Wyoming spirit. People here are very friendly and do a lot to help others. I also love the raw edge of Wyoming and its focus on family ideals, a strong work ethic and pioneering spirit. With such a low population density, we can still afford to bring more people to the area and still have a lot of land to spare.
There is a strong population of artists around Sheridan that includes a lot of musicians and other creatives. I love exploring the Big Horn Mountains, and it is so easy to get away and go camping, kiteboarding or snowboarding – depending on the weather and the season.
Sheridan is the perfect sized town for me right now. It is small enough for me to know a lot of people but also big enough that I can still have some anonymity and independence. The other fun thing about Wyoming is that we tend to be about 5 years behind everywhere else….we have the opportunities to take very cool ideas from other places and start to implement those here. It is an exciting time.
We are so excited to welcome Joel to the 307 Real Estate team. You will be able to find him in the Sheridan and Buffalo offices where you can reach him by calling 307-673-2865 (the Sheridan office phone number). Welcome, Joel!
