No matter what time of year, there are always things that you can be doing to get your house ready to put on the real estate market here in Wyoming or wherever you are. We typically see a rise in house listings in the spring, and even with the global COVID-19 pandemic, we should still see a rise in listings over the next couple of months, although the influx may happen slightly later this year than in prior years.
Given that many are stuck inside or at home under stay-at-home orders or quarantine directives, there is plenty of time to get some of these things done before listing your home. The more cleaned up and move-in ready your home is, the more likely it is that your home will sell quickly and for a higher price.
It’s easy to say “just clean your house up” – but what does that actually mean?! And what are the specific things you can do that will actually make a difference? We’re here to help – keep reading for some tips on how to prioritize your efforts when tidying and putting in the work to get your home up on the housing market in Wyoming!
Clean where the sun doesn’t shine: use this time to clean all of the nooks and crannies that you usually avoid! This could mean taking the disinfectant to the vents, the baseboards or under the couch. When was the last time you cleaned under your bed or emptied your drawers to wipe them out? This is the time!
Spend some time with Marie Kondo: or whatever other organizational system works for you. If you take the time to clean things out and organize what’s left now then your space will be a lot more appealing to potential buyers, and you will have a much easier time packing up to move to your future new home. Organizing can be time-consuming but also doesn’t cost much which means just about anyone can do it.
Touch up the walls: this is another place where little updates can make a big difference. Take some time to remove any personal effects and photos from the walls, patch up any holes and paint over the rough spots. If you have any crazy colors on the walls, it might be a good time to paint them a more neutral color…. while you may love a wacky color palette, it could be a turnoff to potential homebuyers. Homebuyers want to be able to envision themselves in their new home, and the cleaner and more neutral the space is, the easier that becomes.
Check out the lights: the lights in your home can make an enormous difference! Go through your house and replace all of your lightbulbs, vacuum and dust the lampshades and bases and wash all of your curtains and blinds. Harsh or fluorescent lights can be unwelcoming and off-putting. Just by switching these out for warmer lighting, people will feel more at home in your space.
Get down to business in the kitchen: it’s easy to let the grease and grime build up in the corners and nooks in the kitchen. Most people regularly disinfect and clean the obvious surfaces like counters and the stovetop, but do not often wipe down the inside of their refrigerator and pantry, stay on top of tossing expired food or clean their oven. Have things that aren’t expired but you know you won’t use? Drop them at a local food bank or soup kitchen – they will appreciate it!
Get outside (and into your yard): curb appeal means a lot to a number of potential homebuyers (especially those in the Wyoming real estate market)! Take this time to deep clean any outdoor furniture, get your planters and garden beds ready to grow, seed or sod any patchy lawn areas, sweep off the patios and decks. See if there any places to touch up chipped paint or deck and wood staining. Make the outside of your house just as warm and inviting as the inside.
